UNCANNY (Nows)

My first show Uncanny (Nows)  will open June 29th 2024.

“Wir freuen uns mit der Ausstellung „Uncanny (Nows)“ Mathias Vef als neuen Künstler der Galerie vorzustellen.

Mathias Vef erkundet das faszinierende Zusammenspiel von Körper und Identität mit Hilfe Menschen, die ihren Körper als etwas veränderbares ansehen. Diese Fluidität ist für ihn das Mittel menschlicher Existenz. Durch Fotografie, Videos und 3D-Scans sammelt er deshalb getanzte Formen von Balletttänzern, digital manipulierten Bodybuilder, Transpersonen oder Porträts von Sexarbeiter*innen, die er mithilfe chemischer Substanzen transformiert. Mit diesen Verkörperungen schafft er faszinierend surreale Bilder, Collagen oder Choreografien, die einen utopischen Blick auf unser Sein bieten.

Die Sintflut real werden zu scheinender Utopien, die durch KI-Bilder körperlich werden, haben Mathias Vef einen anderen Blick auf unser Sein eröffnet. Mit seinen Uncanny Arbeiten, kommt er dem Synthetischen äußerst nahe, in einem körperlichen Sinn, aber es bleibt eine innere Distanz. Denn so faszinierend das Neuen erscheint, wohnt ihm oft eine unheimliche Fremde inne. Diese Ambiguität, diess Oszillieren zwischen Faszination und Unbehagen, Utopie und Dystopie wird sich in unserer Ausstellung Uncanny (Nows) körperlich manifestieren.

Um dieses hoch komplexe Spannungsfeld abzubilden, haben wir uns entschieden die Ausstellung in Form eines Dialogs mit den Positionen anderer Künstler zu konzipieren. In gemeinsamer Kuration haben Künstler und Galerist andere Künstler eingeladen, die teils kooperative Arbeiten mit Vef erstellt haben. Unter anderem zeigen wir NUCA, eine KI-Kamera, die Deepfakes erzeugt, die gemeinsam mit Benedikt Groß entstanden ist.”

We are excited to introduce Mathias Vef as a new artist in our gallery, starting with the exhibition “Uncanny (Nows)” in June 2024.

Mathias Vef explores the fascinating interplay between body and identity with the help of people who view their body as fluid. This fluidity is for him one of the means of human existence. Thus, through photography, videos, and 3D scans, he collects danced forms from ballet dancers, digitally manipulated bodybuilders, transgender people, or portraits of sex workers that he transforms using chemical substances. With these embodiments, he creates fascinatingly surreal images, collages, or choreographies that offer a utopian view on our state of mind and existence.

The flood of seemingly becoming-real utopias, embodied through AI images, has opened up a different perspective on our existence for Mathias Vef. With his Uncanny works, he comes quite close to the synthetic, in a physical sense, but there remains an inner distance. For as fascinating as the new appears, it often harbors an eerie strangeness within. This ambiguity, this oscillation between fascination and discomfort, utopia and dystopia, will physically manifest in our exhibition Uncanny (Nows).

To represent this highly complex field, we have decided to design the exhibition in the form of a dialogue with the positions of other artists. In joint curation, the artist and the gallery owner have invited other artists who have partly created cooperative works with Vef. Among other things, we are showing NUCA, an AI camera that generates deepfakes, created in collaboration with Benedikt Groß.
