Dear friends,

I am really happy to invite you to the opening of ‚PRETTY UGLY – The Deconstruction of Beauty‘ at Shame Gallery in Brussels. Even though I can’t join the opening on December 11th in person, I hope those in Brussels find their way to see this amazing group show, which also marks the official Opening of Shame Gallery after months of renovations.

Pretty Ugly seeks to break with paradigms of beauty. We invite you to leave behind this representation where people are reduced to physical objects. Let us admire beauty beyond race and gender.
Shame Gallery presents a selection of artists, who deconstruct and reconstruct along new lines. Beauty must be felt as it is: diverse and boundless. Through portraits, self-portraits, sculptures and drawings of twelve artists from eight different countries, all expressing their conception of the chosen theme.

I will show portraits that were done during my residency in Brussels this summer along with two video pieces „Uncanny Family“, a series of self-portraits that are altered with the help of an AI. The machine mind imagines a family tree of mutated variants, digitally inbred by the visual data of my own self.
