Paramasculinities
@ Royal College of Art, London

Aesthetics, masculinity and sports have always been in a fluctuant and fruitful feedback since the first ancient Olympics.

The aesthetics are in a flow and evolving, sport inspired fashion and sport sculptured bodies are complemented by body enhancing technologies.

For the first time Paralympics today draw similar attention as the Olympics and cyborg bodies of athletes like Oscar Pistorius modified the perception of male aesthetics and masculinity.

The greek word para means deviance and variance and that was always a source of attraction. The ideal image of Sport, the competition of healthy, young and innocent bodies is vanishing. The Paralympic aesthetics may even define the future. Not imitating the norm, but creating something new – sculpting the beauty of such bodies.
